Chakra Sounds

One of my favorite ways of working with the chakras is through sound vibrations, music, and mantras.

Certain sound vibrations are known to have profound effects on your physical and mental health, as they are able to directly shift your brainwaves and create a state of coherence between the body, and mind.

The belief that sound influences the mind and the body's wellbeing is not new. For thousands of years, chanting and mantra recitation have been an important part of Hindu culture.

The sound and vibrations generated by chanting mantras enhance theta brain frequencies, which are associated with a deep, meditative state.

In this article, I am going to give you an easy to understand guide on how to incorporate mantras into your chakra healing practice.

We are going to talk about the importance of seed mantras and discuss which sound frequencies are most beneficial for each of your chakras.

Without further ado, let's get started with a simple mantra definition:

What is Mantra?

Mantra is a single-syllable sound that can be said aloud and repeated during meditation or any other spiritual practice, to keep your mind focused.

Mantras originally come from the Hindu and Buddhist tradition, and some of the oldest mantras can be traced back to the Vedic (Hindu) scriptures from 3000 years ago.

According to the Vedic tradition, sound vibrations tap into the elemental energy current which exists throughout this world but it is invisible to the human eye.

One of the most famous mantras today is the sound 'OM'.

OM () is considered to be the primordial sound, which carries the essence of the Universe.

OM is also the most important seed mantra (or in Sanskrit bija mantra), which resonates with the energy of your third eye and crown chakras.

What Is Bija Mantra?

Sanksrit alphabet consist of 50 different letters called bijas (or seed mantras), which are believed to be the sounds blessed with great divine powers and infinite energy.

Do you want to know the best part?

Each of these 50 Sanskrit letters (bijas) can be found on 50 petals of the first six chakra symbols (from root chakra to third eye chakra)!

Some people even say that Sanskrit is the most important language among all languages.
They consider it to be "the tongue of the gods" and pre-existing human beings, as it consists of bija mantras - vibratory constituents of the entire universe.

What Are The Chakra Sounds?

There are 7 chakras in the human body and these are the sounds (also known as bija mantras in the Sanskrit language) associated with each chakra:

  1. Root Chakra (Muladhara) - bija mantra LAM
  2. Sacral Chakra (Svadhishthana) - bija mantra VAM
  3. Solar Plexus Chakra (Manipura) - bija mantra RAM
  4. Heart Chakra (Anahata) - bija mantra YAM
  5. Throat Chakra (Vishuddha) - bija mantra HAM
  6. Third Eye Chakra (Ajna) - bija mantra OM
  7. Crown Chakra (Sahasrara) - bija mantra OM

In order to enjoy the benefits of chanting these seed mantras, you need to commit to a daily practice for a longer period of time.

This will allow the mind to adapt to the training and eliminate all of your limiting beliefs.

Each mantra can be chanted multiple times or you can build and develop your own mantra chanting sequence.

What Are The 7 Chakra Frequencies?

Did you know that each of the seven chakras also has a special sound frequency?

Frequency is normally measured in hertz unit, and it describes the number of cycles sound waves complete in 1 second.

For example:
528Hz = 528 cycles per 1 second.

To get a better idea of how does 528Hz actually sound like, simply search for any online tone generator in Google and type in your desired Hz value.

The entire sound spectrum, which is audible for a human ear, ranges from 20Hz to 20,000Hz

These are the corresponding hertz frequencies of 7 chakras from bottom to top:

  1. Root Chakra (Muladhara): 396 Hz
  2. Sacral Chakra (Svadhishthana): 417 Hz
  3. Solar Plexus Chakra (Manipura): 528 Hz
  4. Heart Chakra (Anahata): 639 Hz
  5. Throat Chakra (Vishuddha): 741 Hz
  6. Third Eye Chakra (Ajna): 852 Hz
  7. Crown Chakra (Sahasrara): 963 Hz

When you begin to experiment with some of these frequencies, you might feel a gentle sensation in your physical body.

It means that the corresponding chakra responds to the frequency played and gets activated by the vibrating sound wave!

Chakra Sounds Healing

Science is still catching up on learning how sound therapy helps with the healing of our mind and body, but recent progress is very encouraging.

An analysis of hundreds of published scientific papers on the neurochemistry of music indicates that sound therapy has the potential to reduce stress, eliminate anxiety, and help patients suffering from dementia or Parkinson's disease.

However, you don't have to wait for any scientific proof that mantras and other forms of sound healing will be beneficial for your chakra system.

Albert Einstein once said that "learning is experience and everything else is just information".

I would really encourage you to try chanting some of these ancient, seed mantras and experiment with other forms of sound therapy, such as:

  • Tibetan Singing Bowls
  • Tuning Forks
  • Classical Music
  • Binaural Beats
  • Sounds of Nature (rain, water, birds, forest, etc.)

Now over to you:

Have you tried any forms of chakra sound therapy?
Do you use some these bija mantras in your yoga or meditation practice?
